The Department of Blood Transfusion at Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Xiamen University was established in February 2006. After nearly two decades of development, it has become a comprehensive department integrating clinical, laboratory, and management functions, with significant progress in medical treatment, education, and research. The department currently employs 12 staff members, including 5 with senior professional titles, 5 with intermediate titles, and 2 with junior titles. Among them, 5 hold postgraduate degrees and 7 hold undergraduate degrees.
Currently, the services provided by the Department of Blood Transfusion include:
1. Routine blood transfusion compatibility laboratory tests: serological blood typing, red blood cell antibody screening, platelet antibody testing, cross-matching, and coagulation tests such as thromboelastography.
2. Complex blood transfusion compatibility laboratory tests: laboratory diagnosis of hemolytic disease of the newborn caused by alloimmunization, compatibility testing for patients undergoing allogeneic bone marrow and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, transfusion compatibility testing for patients with autoimmune hemolytic anemia, identification of complex antibodies and cross-matching, serological and molecular typing of rare and complex blood types, platelet typing tests for patients with platelet transfusion refractoriness, and transfusion management of the coagulation system.
3. Blood transfusion therapies: including PRP (platelet-rich plasma) collection technology known as "perfect repair," semi-total blood exchange technology referred to as the "nemesis of immune diseases," and lymphoplasma exchange.
4. Personalized blood transfusion: leveraging the robust compatibility testing laboratory and advanced transfusion therapy techniques, the department provides safe and effective personalized blood transfusion plans tailored to the characteristics and developmental stages of different diseases, guiding and supporting clinical diagnosis and treatment.
Since its establishment, the department has strictly controlled the quality of blood transfusion, maintaining a rational blood usage rate of over 90%. The rate of adverse transfusion reactions is only about 0.1%, with no severe adverse reactions reported, effectively ensuring the safety of blood usage throughout the hospital. Since its inception, the department has participated annually in the external quality assessment activities for blood transfusion compatibility organized by the National Center for Clinical Laboratories and the Fujian Provincial Center for Clinical Laboratories, consistently achieving excellent results with full marks.
