**Department of Orthopedics: Joint Surgery and Sports Medicine**
The Department of Joint Surgery and Sports Medicine is a national key clinical specialty construction project, a key specialty construction project in Fujian Province, and a key clinical specialty in Xiamen. It serves as the Xiamen Orthopedic Quality Control Center, the Regional Demonstration Center for Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) in Joint Surgery, and the Standardized Training Base for Shoulder and Elbow Sports Medicine under the China Medical Education Association (Southwest Fujian). The department houses the Xiamen University Institute of Bone and Joint Diseases, the renowned Physician Studio of Professor Wang Kunzheng, and the Employee Technological Innovation Studio of Wang Shaojie. With a well-structured and highly skilled team and strong technical capabilities, The department is equipped with a variety of advanced imported medical instruments, surgical tools, and devices. It is also a master's and doctoral enrollment site for Xiamen University and Fujian Medical University, as well as a postdoctoral research station.
The department has 46 open beds and a staff of 33, including 5 chief physicians, 3 associate chief physicians, and 2 attending physicians. Among the team, there are 7 MDs and 3 master degree holeders, with 2 master supervisors and 1 doctoral supervisor. All members of the specialty have undergone multiple training and clinical studies in Europe and the United States, establishing academic exchange relationships with renowned universities in the U.S., Europe, and Japan. The department frequently invites high-level international experts for academic discussions and surgical demonstrations.
**Specializations and Expertise**
The Department of Joint Surgery and Sports Medicine excels in the diagnosis and treatment of various orthopedic conditions, including trauma, degenerative diseases, sports injuries, tumors, deformities, infections, and osteonecrosis. We provide the most advanced and effective treatment methods internationally, encompassing conservative treatments, minimally invasive procedures, and surgeries. Our department is characterized by personalized, minimally invasive, rapid rehabilitation, and menu-style treatment options. Our arthroscopic surgeries, minimally invasive techniques, and artificial knee and hip replacement technologies are at the international forefront.
In addition to general specialist clinics, we offer specialized clinics such as the "Refractory Shoulder Pain Clinic," "Knee Osteoarthritis Clinic," "Hip Pain Clinic," and "Osteoporosis Screening and Bone Pain Clinic."
**1. Arthroscopic Techniques**
As a training base for bone and joint endoscopy under the National Health Commission, our department is the forerunner in the province to perform arthroscopic surgeries on the knee, hip, shoulder, elbow, and ankle joints. We lead the province in the cumulative volume of arthroscopic surgeries. Our department conducts arthroscopic joint debridement, loose body removal, meniscus suturing, synovectomy for rheumatoid or pigmented villonodular synovitis, and also fracture reduction and fixation. Our strengths lie in high-difficulty arthroscopic surgeries, such as anterior and posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and revision, anterior cruciate ligament repair with remnant preservation, posterior root repair of the meniscus, patellar stabilization, labral repair for recurrent shoulder dislocation, massive rotator cuff repair, and hip, ankle, and elbow arthroscopy. The annual volume of arthroscopic surgeries performed in the department exceeds 800 cases.
**2. Arthroplasty and Revision Surgery**
Our department was among the first in the province to perform hip replacements, total hip resurfacing, and knee resurfacing. We presented the pioneering achievement of Xiamen's first reverse total shoulder arthroplasty and lead the province in cumulative surgical volume in this field. We specialize in various primary joint replacements, complex joint revisions, femoral neck-preserving total hip replacements, hip resurfacing, unicompartmental knee replacements, shoulder replacements, reverse shoulder replacements, and custom tumor prosthesis replacements. Our minimally invasive joint replacement techniques, such as hip replacements via direct anterior approach (DAA) for hip dysplasia, femoral head necrosis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis, and traumatic fractures, are among our strengths. Our knee replacement surgery volume ranks among the highest in Fujian Province.
**3. Diagnosis and Treatment of Deformities and Degenerative Diseases**
Our department is also known for correcting congenital and acquired deformities of bones and joints and treating age-related degenerative changes. We have achieved advanced levels in treating congenital hip dislocations with hip preservation and joint replacement, treating femoral head necrosis with conservative and surgical methods, treating knee degenerative changes with knee preservation, partial replacement, and total knee replacement.
**4. Minimally Invasive Techniques for Fractures **
We extensively perform repair and reconstruction techniques for fractures and dislocations in various parts of the body. Our distinctive features include treating non-union fractures, intra-articular fractures, minimally invasive treatments for osteoporotic fractures in the elderly, and complex comminuted fractures around joints under arthroscopic assistance.
**5. Diagnosis and Treatment of Bone Tumors**
Our department specializes in treating benign and malignant bone and soft tissue tumors. We adopt individualized treatment plans for different types of bone tumors, aiming to preserve or reconstruct limb function and improve patients' quality of life while treating the tumors.
**6. Digital Orthopedic Technology**
We extensively apply digital orthopedic technology to assist in joint replacements, complex fractures, and spinal surgeries. Through digital imaging planning, 3D printing modeling, and intraoperative navigation, we perform preoperative planning and intraoperative assistance, creating personalized surgical plans that significantly enhance the precision of surgical procedures.
