Department Overview
The Department of Vascular Surgery at Zhongshan Hospital, Xiamen University, established in 2007, is the first independently established vascular surgery department in southwestern Fujian. It integrates medical care, teaching, and research, and holds the status of National Key Clinical Specialty Development Unit – General Surgery (Vascular Surgery) and Fujian Provincial Key Clinical Specialty – General Surgery (Vascular Surgery). As the center for Quality Control of Peripheral Vascular Interventional Technology of Xiamen, the department is fully responsible for the standardized management, quality supervision, and continuous improvement of peripheral vascular interventional procedures in the Xiamen region. It is also recognized as an "Excellent Thrombosis Prevention and Control Center" under the National Project for Pulmonary Embolism and Deep Vein Thrombosis Prevention and Treatment Capacity Building, and has received honors such as Municipal Youth Civilization Award and Municipal Direct-Organ Women’s Civilized Post.
The department has 42 approved beds and a team of 33 healthcare professionals, including 12 physicians and 21 nurses, among whom 4 hold doctoral degrees and 9 hold master’s degrees, with 7 senior professional titles. This constitutes a highly competent and well structured workforce.
Under the leadership of Professor Huang Xiaojin, the department director and chief physician, the team consistently adheres to a patient centered service philosophy, striving to deliver high quality medical care. With strong technical expertise, the department has achieved notable breakthroughs in minimally invasive specialty techniques, realizing therapeutic goals of minimal trauma, less pain, faster recovery, and shorter hospital stays, placing its overall medical standard among the top in Fujian Province. In 2025, the department recorded 15,060 outpatient visits, 2,024 discharged patients, and completed 1,524 surgical procedures, including 1,076 grade III and 384 grade IV surgeries (indicating high technical difficulty). Grade III and IV procedures accounted for 95.8% of all surgeries, with a bed utilization rate of 110.67% and a CMI value of 2.96, demonstrating its robust capacity in complex surgical interventions and regional academic influence.
Additionally, the department has established close collaborative relationships with leading vascular surgery centers in China, including the Department of Vascular Surgery at Changhai Hospital, Shanghai, and the Vascular Surgery Alliance of Shanghai Ninth People’s Hospital. It serves as a training base for minimally invasive techniques in lower extremity venous diseases for Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine Affiliated Ninth People’s Hospital and a cultivation unit for wound repair specialty under the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, providing strong technical support and academic exchange platforms for sustained development.
Scope of Treatment
The department covers a broad spectrum of arterial, venous, and lymphatic disorders, excluding those of the heart and cerebral vessels. Specific conditions include:
I. Arterial diseases: Abdominal aortic aneurysm, thoracic aortic dissection, visceral artery aneurysm, carotid artery stenosis, lower extremity atherosclerosis obliterans, diabetic foot, acute arterial embolism, inflammatory arterial occlusive diseases, and arteriosclerotic occlusive diseases.
II. Venous diseases: Lower extremity varicose veins, deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, post thrombotic syndrome, and non occlusive venous disorders.
III. Lymphatic diseases: Lymphangitis, erysipelas, lymphedema, etc.
IV. Other conditions: Arteriovenous fistula, hemangioma, vascular malformations, etc.
The department is organized into four subspecialty groups: Arterial Interventional Group, Venous Interventional Group, Varicose Vein & Lymphedema Group, and Wound Repair Group, ensuring refined and precise diagnosis and treatment for each category.
Specialty Techniques
Building on conventional open vascular surgery, the department fully leverages advanced technologies and equipment to actively perform minimally invasive endovascular interventions, establishing a core philosophy of minimally invasive precision therapy.
I. Minimally Invasive Treatment for Varicose Veins
The department has extensive experience in minimally invasive treatment of lower extremity varicose veins, performing over 1,000 such procedures annually, ranking first in the province. Routine techniques include laser ablation, radiofrequency ablation, and sclerotherapy. In 2025, the department successfully performed the first case in Fujian using Mechanochemical Ablation (MOCA) for varicose veins. In 2026, Professor Huang Xiaojin’s team achieved another breakthrough by completing the first case in Fujian of venous glue closure at room temperature. This state of the art technique features no thermal burn risk, can be performed under local anesthesia with only pinhole sized incisions, and does not require prolonged compression bandaging postoperatively, reducing hospital stay and recovery time. It is particularly suitable for elderly patients and those intolerant to traditional surgical trauma. This success marks a new era of non invasive, comfortable varicose vein care.
II. Endovascular Treatment of Aortic Diseases
The department is highly proficient in endovascular therapy for aortic diseases, routinely performing endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) for abdominal aortic aneurysms and thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) for type B aortic dissections. As one of the first units in Asia to apply modular stent grafts for type B aortic dissection in southwestern Fujian, the department maintains a leading regional position in the minimally invasive treatment of aortic conditions.
III. Interventional Therapy for Lower Extremity Atherosclerosis Obliterans
Routine balloon angioplasty and stenting for lower extremity arterial occlusive disease are performed, with rich experience in comprehensive management of lower extremity atherosclerosis obliterans and diabetic foot, helping many diabetic patients avoid amputation.
IV. Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) Prevention and Treatment System
As a core participant in the hospital wide VTE prevention and treatment initiative, the department leads educational lectures on VTE management, enhances the prevention and treatment protocols, and promotes standardized tools and health education. Recognized as an "Excellent Thrombosis Prevention and Control Center", it routinely performs inferior vena cava filter placement and thrombus removal for deep vein thrombosis.
V. Supermicrosurgical Treatment of Lymphedema
In 2025, the department successfully performed the first lymphaticovenous anastomosis (LVA) in southwestern Fujian. This procedure is extremely demanding, requiring multiple lymphatic vessels to be precisely anastomosed to venules under a supermicroscope to restore lymphatic drainage. The success of this technique filled a gap in supermicrosurgical lymphedema treatment in the region. Senior nurse Deng Yapeng, one of Xiamen’s first internationally certified lymphedema therapists, runs the lymphedema care clinic, providing individualized assessment and comprehensive decongestive therapy. In addition, online nursing consultation services have been initiated to extend professional care to patients’ homes, establishing a full cycle diagnosis and treatment system covering both inpatient care and home based rehabilitation.
VI. Wound Repair and Specialized Nursing
As a cultivation unit for wound repair under the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the department has extensive experience in managing complex wounds, including diabetic foot ulcers, venous ulcers, and chronic wounds. Senior nurse Lin Jinzhen, a certified wound, ostomy, and continence nurse of the Chinese Nursing Association, collaborates with the medical team to deliver standardized nursing care and rehabilitation guidance for patients with acute and chronic wounds and ostomies. The department has further expanded its hospital home integrated wound care service, bringing professional medical services directly to patients’ homes, offering convenient and continuous high quality care for immobile wound patients, thereby significantly improving patient experience and recovery outcomes.

The department boasts a highly skilled and well structured team of professionals. Currently, there are 1 chief physician, 2 associate chief physicians, 4 doctors with Ph.D. degrees, 9 with master’s degrees, and 7 senior professional titles.
Academic Leader – Huang Xiaojin
Director of the Department of Vascular Surgery, Chief Physician, and Master’s Supervisor. He concurrently serves as Vice Chairman of the Vascular Surgery Branch of Fujian Medical Association, Chairman of the Xiamen Peripheral Vascular Intervention Quality Management Committee, Chairman of the Innovation Committee for Blood Purification Vascular Access of Fujian Cross Strait Medical and Health Exchange Association, and Vice Chairman of the Vascular Surgery Professional Committee of Fujian Cross Strait Medical and Health Exchange Association. He is also a member of the Chinese Venous Varicose Vein Committee of the International Union of Angiology (IUA), a national youth committee member of the Chinese College of Cardiovascular Physicians’ Endovascular Specialty Committee, a standing member of the Carotid Artery Group of the Peripheral Vascular Disease Professional Committee of the Chinese Society of Microcirculation, and a standing member of the Varicose Vein Group of the same society. He specializes in surgical and endovascular treatment of various vascular disorders, including abdominal aortic aneurysms, visceral artery aneurysms, thoracic aortic dissections, and carotid artery stenosis. He has extensive experience in comprehensive management of lower extremity atherosclerosis obliterans and diabetic foot, and has unique insights into minimally invasive treatment of venous thrombosis and hemangiomas. He has devoted in depth research to minimally invasive treatment of varicose veins, possessing advanced techniques and rich clinical experience.
The department places high emphasis on talent development and young physician training. In July 2025, Dr. Xu Jingyi, a young vascular surgeon, won the first prize in the National Vascular Surgery Young and Middle aged Physician Case Competition, after 12 provincial qualifiers and 4 regional semi finals, demonstrating that the department’s diagnostic and therapeutic skills have received national peer recognition.
